Badr Rami

Is the torchbearer of this art by his voice, his soul and his presence.

Badr Rami, rising star; is a confirmed artist in the field of Mouachahates (poems with fixed form) and Koudoud Halabiya (songs of Aleppo). He is the spiritual son of the great Syrian singer Sabah Fakhri (one of the pillars of Arab music, a symbol of authenticity and his confirmed disciple). Since his youth, his inclination was towards the great tenors of Arab music and singing such as, Oum Kalthoum, Mohamed Abdelwahab, Melhem Barakat…

Badr Rami is a young Artist of Syrian origin was born in Casablanca in Morocco. His father, Maestro Mohamed Rami Zeitouni, is a famous Syrian violinist. He is originally from the city of Aleppo, the spiritual, cultural and economic capital of Syria and one of the most important centers of Eastern Arab music whose people have an unparalleled love for authentic music and art.

Badr Rami is known on the Arab artistic scene thanks to his participation in the biggest national and international festivals, to which he has achieved resounding success. It was a recognition for him by a large public connoisseur and admirer, when he presented heritage songs of Mouachahates and Koudoud Halabiya, learned from the great master in the matter, Sabah Fakhri, symbol of Arab song and rapture.

Badr Rami culminated when it was presented to the public at the Sufi Culture and Music Festival in Fez in 2009 by the Grand master him self Sabah Fakhri.

Badr Rami’s artistic career began at the end of the 90s. He chose a noble, lasting and eternal style for him self, which gave him fame on the contemporary Arab art scene. He has remained and will remain determined to preserve the songs of the original heritage, and to present it in the distinguished style of the great master Sabah Fakhri. Badr’s talent began, coincidentally from his birth, because that day Sabah Fakhri was visiting Morocco to celebrate the anniversary of the accession of His Majesty the late King Hassan II to the throne. Thus, he visited him at the clinic by virtue of the strong ties which united him to his grandfather who arrived in Morocco in 1957 and it is by virtue of an old tradition that he whispered in his ear « Al Adan » his first call to prayer and with the sublime voice of Sabah Fakhri. It was Badr’s great gateway to the spiritual, artistic and musical world in particular.

Thus the friendship between Sabah Fakhri and Badr’s grandfather, spanning from Aleppo to Casablanca was the strong link in Badr’s career. And let’s not forget that anyone from Aleppo is influenced by the Mouachahates and Koudoud Halabiya, beautiful words, beautiful melody and authentic Tarab … We know from Aleppo and its in habitants the love of art and creativity and good listening to beautiful musical works. Every self-respecting Aleppo home has at least one musical instrument (usually lute) or a beautiful voice, and artist Badr Rami grew up in an artistic, cultural and musical environment. His grandfather had a beautiful voice and played the accordion, plus he was a university professor with a doctorate in law. His father is a violinist, he leads his musical group “Angham Achark” (Oriental Songs) as a maestro, he accompanies him in most of his artistic and musical concerts, he holds a law degree. When Badr was young, he listened to the Mouachahates and Koudoud Halabiya and the music of the Tarab in all family celebrations and social gatherings. Badr, words and music were one, and these flowed from him in a natural way. The schools of the great artists were an inexhaustible source of knowledge, such as: Sabah Fakhri, Mohamed Khairi, Adib Al Dayekh, Sheikh Sayed Darwish, Sheikh Ali Al Darwish, Mohamed Othman, Sheikh Omar Al Batsh, Sheikh Bakri Al Kurdi, and Sheikh Salama Hijazi, in addition to the songs of Oum Kalthoum, Mohamed Abdelwahab, and the great artists of the Arab scene …

Badr Rami used to listen to anything related to Sufi music and particularly the tenors, Sheikh Sayed Al Nakshabandi, Sheikh Sabri Moudallal, Hamza Shakkur and Hassan Al-Haffar … His recitation of the Holy Quran (Tajwid ) allowed him to address the general public in a clear and understandable way like the great declaimers, such as Cheikh Mohamed Khalil Al Husari, Cheikh Mustafa Ismail and Cheikh Abdelbasset Abdessamad, Cheikh Mohamed Seddik Al Menchaoui, Cheikh Ali Al Hudhaifi … This was the basis of his correctness in melodies, words and rhythms.

When he was two years old, his father, mother, members of his family and a few close people began to sense his talent, when he hummed a few songs from the Tarab.

Then he started percussion from his early childhood, when he was only two years old. When he reached the age of six, his father enrolled him in addition to his studies at the Conservatory to learn music and play the lute and violin, his lute teacher was the former director of the Conservatory of Casablanca, and one of the most important pillars of the art of playing the lute in Morocco and the Arab world Mr. Hadj Younes. During this period, Badr attracted the attention and admiration of many great artists and media professionals, who recognized and praised his talent, such as:

Sabah Fakhri, Wadih El Safi, the great Egyptian composer Mohamed Sultan, the great Egyptian journalist Wajdi Al Hakim, Abdelwahab Doukkali, Mahmoud El Idrissi, Lotfi Bouchnak, and others … Badr participated in all cultural events and meetings school and academic techniques, until the end of his studies, as he specialized in the field of business administration, then began to turn to singing, art and music.

With slow and confident steps, Badr Rami embarked on the path of the song of Tarab, specialized in the field of heritage and authentic Tarab “Al Mouachahates, Al koudoud Al Halabiya, Al Adwar, AL Mawal (song of ‘solo improvisations) … “

Sabah Fakhri formed Badr in his own model, through which he opened up to the repertoire of Arabic music with its various references and lyrical styles. Thus, he has fashioned himself a successful character of the Mouachahates and koudoud Halabiya. He knew how to enrich a diverse artistic program of famous Arab poets, classical and contemporary.

Like the great artists and musicians, Badr Rami knew how to interpret the masterpieces of Tarab, from Samaiyat to Mouachahates, then Al Dawr, and solo improvisations, through the Mawal then the Koudoud Halabiya and also the songs of Tarab …

Badr Rami is one of the distinguished voices on the artistic scene in the Arab world, with the consensus of music lovers in the Middle East and the Maghreb. A masterful interpretation of the original, in the same artistic form and musical style presented by great artist Sabah Fakhri …

From his birth in Morocco, Badr Rami benefited greatly from his life in the Kingdom of Morocco, as he acquired musical and cultural experience from two different « Moroccan » and « Syrian » schools. Due to his mixed Moroccan culture of Arabic, French and Amazigh as well as his Syrian culture, the artist Badr stands out with his high artistic abilities, so that he can sing several other styles of Tarab with merit and distinction. He sings the great tenors around the world, repertoires like:

Oum Kalthoum, Mohamed Abdelwahab, Abdelhalim Hafez, Wadih El Safi, Fayrouz and Melhem Barakat, Abdelwahab Doukkali, Abdelhadi Belkhayat … It is not limited only to Koudoud Halabiya and Mouachahates …

Since the artist Badr Rami is fluent in the French language, he is also distinguished by his ability to brilliantly interpret Western songs (Charles Aznavour) such as « La Bohème » at the Mégarama in Casablanca, a demonstration of his vocal abilities.

Artist Badr Rami is also considered one of the voices that attempt to preserve this noble and ancient style of Tarab. This greatly contributed to the brilliance of his artistic and creative balance, accompanied by his musical group “Angham Achark”, led by his father, Maestro Mohamed Rami Zeitouni.

During his visit to Aleppo in 2010, artist Badr Rami visited the well-known lute maker Ebrahim Sukar. He heard about him and his distinguished art from his fellow artists. Artist Badr Rami intended to buy an Aleppo lute to take with him to Morocco. During this visit, a prominent lute players from Aleppo was present, Said Aldali, friend of Ebrahim Sukar, and it is through the conversation, that they learned that Badr Rami is an artist of Aleppo origin, that he was born and lives in Morocco. When they heard his voice they were very impressed, and Ebrahim Sukar immediately contacted Aleppo radio in the person of Abdelkhalek Kalahji, Director of the radio, where he will have his first artistic interview in Syria. Following this Badr Rami visited Sabah Fakhri at his home in Aleppo, he told him what Professor Ebrahim Sukar did, so he immediately contacted Aleppo radio in turn and recommended him warmly by specifying to them his great talent. The next day, Badr introduced himself to Aleppo Radio, he was warmly received by the Radio Director and they began the artistic interview. Badr made a brief tour of his artistic life punctuated by a few selected pieces. It was the first time that Badr was on Radio Aleppo and in Syria.

In 2018, Badr Rami was invited to perform at the Royal Opera House in Muscat in the Sultanate of Oman, as part of the tribute to two renowned artists Pavarotti and Sabah Fakhri. After the success of the big concert, he was invited by the administration of the Sultan Qabus University for an artistic meeting with the students, the professors and the administrators, in order to present an artistic panorama and a conference on the Arab and authentic heritage of the art of Mouachahates and koudoud Halabiya. Accompanied by his father, Maestro Rami Zeitouni, he gave a conference during which different models and types of Mouachahates and koudoud Halabiya were presented with their explanation in a simplified way, which aroused the admiration of the public.

You should know that this performance in Muscat was due to the successes achieved at the Lille Opera in France in front of an audience composed mainly of Westerners and what is more without sound system and without microphone for two hours with an Orchestra of different nationalities but professional, in the purest tradition and the essence of Arab music and conducted by Maestro Rami Zeitouni, the audience’s ovation was unparalleled; At the Institut du Monde Arabe (IMA) in Paris after the success in Lille, he was invited to two representations for the Arab community. After the success of both performances at the IMA, he was invited to a concert by the Cairo Opera House Administration in Egypt. The success being always there, the organizers of the festival Al Malouf of Constantine invited it in their turn.
